Day 1
Fly overnight to Johannesburg.
Day 2
Connect with a short onward flight to Windhoek, where you'll be greeted and driven to your hotel in the suburbs. Your 4WD hire car will be delivered this afternoon and you will be briefed on the routes and driving in Namibia. This evening you might want to sample Joe's Beerhouse or NICE, two very different Windhoek eateries!
Day 3
This morning you will set off south to the Namib Desert, a real highlight of any Namibia itinerary. The drive will take roughly five hours, with stunning desert and mountain landscapes constantly distracting you from the roads! Accommodation for two nights will be in a scenic location close to the dunes of Sossusvlei.
Day 4
A full day to explore the desert under your own steam. Highlights include the ethereal mud pan of Dead Vlei, climbing the massive Dune 45 for sweeping desert vistas and dropping by at Sesriem Canyon.
Day 5
Today you will drive north to the west coast of Namibia, passing through stark, remote desert scenery to arrive at the oasis of Swakopmund. In this charming German colonial town you'll stay for two nights within walking distance of the centre. One night you will definitely want to book a table at The Tug restaurant for some fresh seafood.
Day 6
There are some outstanding excursions to enjoy around Swakopmund. These include kayaking with seals at Pelican Point and a guided visit to Sandwich Harbour for a taster of the Skeleton Coast.
Day 7
Another drive north, this time moving slightly inland amongst the rugged mountains and kopjes of Damaraland. Your base for the next two nights takes full advantage of these inspiring vistas – it's a great spot for a sundowner.
Day 8
There are varied activities to enjoy in this area of Damaraland. You can visit the Twyfelfontein rock art site under your own steam or book a guided excursion to search for desert adapted elephant.
Day 9
If you have enjoyed the desert wildlife so far it's now time for a classic safari in Etosha. The drive north to the southern gate will take around five hours, and once here you can enjoy spectacular game viewing by just relaxing at the camp waterhole.
Day 10
A special day, driving eastwards across the national park under your own steam. You can stop at water holes along the way, enjoy lunch and look out for elephant, rhino, cheetah, giraffe and antelope. Your base for the next two nights is just outside the eastern gate.
Day 11
The eastern section of the park around Etosha Pan is scenic and fascinating, with a huge diversity of wildlife to discover while self-driving.
Day 12
Today's drive takes you south to the beautiful Waterberg Plateau. One of Namibia's most scenic areas also has decent volumes of wildlife, and you can explore by vehicle or on foot.
Day 13
Your final drive will take approximately three and a half hours, ending at Windhoek airport where you drop off the hire car. It's then a short hop to Johannesburg and an overnight flight back home.
Day 14
Arrive in the UK.
