A relatively new accommodation, Fish River Lodge has undoubtedly the best location in the area, perched precipitously on the edge of the canyon itself. Set in a grove of quiver trees, a real oasis amidst the harsh desert environment, the lodge commands sensational views into and across the canyon throughout the day, with striking changing colours during sunrise and sunset. There are 20 spacious stone chalets positioned evenly along the western rim of the canyon, designed to look as natural as possible within this great, timeless landscape. Each has large windows to allow plenty of light to enter during the day and permit views out to the canyon. The en-suite rooms are comfortable and airy, even in the hottest months, with indoor and outdoor showers, double basins, a dressing area and the option to sleep out under the stars on the terrace “bed.”

Elsewhere, there is a swimming pool with a view and a range of inside and al fresco bar and dining areas, reflecting the changing weather conditions throughout the year. Decoration throughout is relatively minimal to assimilate with the earthy tones of the canyon, but there are German colonial and local Nama adornments to add a little character. Activities include day hikes or overnight expeditions into the canyon, along with nature drives in the canyon and on the surrounding gravel plains. Visitors can either fly-in to the airstrip or visit on a longer self-drive itinerary.
