Sossusvlei Desert Lodge is arguably the most luxurious, modern accommodation in the area, a great base for exploring the Namibrand and Sossusvlei. Built under the shadow of a rugged peak, the lodge looks out to a vast, beautiful plain with seemingly endless horizons and regular wildlife traffic. The main buildings are constructed largely from stone, making them a lot more solid and substantial than tented accommodation, but the earthy colours blend in with the surrounding landscapes so that the lodge isn’t an eyesore.
The 10 suites are opulent and stylish, with all the modern facilities you’d expect in a five star hotel. There is soothing décor throughout, outside showers with views over the plains and skylights above the beds to permit private stargazing after lights out. In fact, enjoying the vast, unobstructed blanket of stars in this unpolluted haven is a big focus, with an observatory in the main lodge and a resident astronomer on hand to identify constellations. The split level main lodge has numerous cubby holes and vantage points for privacy seekers, and also offers the best fine dining and wine list in the area. Activities include guided explorations of the Namibrand Reserve and the Namib Naukluft National Park, as well as quad biking and dune walks, while the emerald season rates offer attractive value for such an opulent lodge.
