Set in the north-eastern corner of Namibia’s Central Highlands under the stunning, flat topped Waterberg Plateau, Waterberg Wilderness Lodge is the best accommodation in the area. Formerly a neglected farmstead, the German owners have turned this into a warm, inviting lodge within the private Waterberg Wilderness Reserve. Nestled beautifully in a valley under the shadow of the plateau, the eight doubles and two family rooms are spacious and comfortable, with en-suite facilities and a design that mixes minimalistic simplicity with local furnishings and splashes of colour. The rooms and main building are all built from Waterberg sandstone to blend in seamlessly with the Plateau itself, and there are peaceful gardens and a cool swimming pool where you can relax.

Within the lodge, a sociable atmosphere pervades in the dining area and lounge, with a campfire for the cooler months. There is an impressive range of activities to complement the great scenery, including Plateau hikes, nature drives, unguided walking trails and unique cultural visits to meet the local Herero people. Although certainly not of Etosha proportions, there a good volumes of game in this area, with the chance to see giraffe, zebra, eland, kudu and even introduced white rhino!
